Twitter Reaches 44.5 Million Users!

It should be no surprise to find out that Twitter is growing exceptionally fast. The social network has been growing exponentially since January of this year. We can only imagine that the site will grow even more within the next year because of its buzz and expanding assortment of applications.

April’s numbers for unique visitors to the site was the largest increase Twitter has seen so far with a 13 million difference from March. Now, Twitter’s numbers are in for June and show that the social network has exceeded 44 million unique visitors. ComScore reported the total visitors was 44.5 million. The huge growth can really be seen when you compare this June’s 44.5 million to the modest 2.9 million visitors in June of 2008. That is a 1460% increase! Twitter’s popularity has landed it in 52^nd place for largest site in the world (according to comScore), beating out ESPN and just behind Craigslist and BBC.

There is a little controversy over whether these numbers are true because most Twitter members use applications to post new tweets instead of actually visiting the site, applications such as NetVibes, TweetDeck, and others. But the overall growth can still be seen in the numbers above, regardless.

Fortune Magazine recently searched social networks such as Twitter to name the top 100 companies utilizing social networking. The most used applications by companies was between Twitter, Facebook, and blogs (54% using Twitter, 32% using blogs, and 29% using a Facebook Fan Page). These statistics suggest that Twitter is the most used social network by businesses. That should make Twitter excited.

It’s pretty reasonable to claim that Twitter is the perfect mix of business and pleasure (or just casual social networking, but that doesn’t fit as well).
