Thoughts on Google Chrome OS
The new operating system that was announce by Google just yesterday has brought with it some debate on the practicality of Google trying to take on the OS field.
Thoughts in the Keystone office regarding Google’s bold move are dominated by doubt. Managing Partner and Networking expert Michael Miller says,
“I have always found it curious that the telephone company wants to sell cable TV and the cable company wants to sell telephone service. I’m sure with the resources of the Google corporation they believe they can have an impact on the OS market. They may be right. However, my bet is this is going to be a huge money pit and a terrible strategic move. There are already at least 40 free operating systems (some pretty good) and other more established players like Mac, UNIX and Linux which over the last 10-20(+) years and countless trillions (upon trillions) of dollars haven’t even produced a credible threat to Microsoft Desktop OS. Plus, assuming you could get people to use it, then all the software vendors have to scrap countless trillions (upon trillions) of dollars invested in development to (re-)write software for the platform. While I’m not saying Microsoft is God-like and cannot be conquered or that their product is anywhere near perfect – I just like their odds. So I’ll bet on Microsoft vs. the field, even with the field including Google.”
It seems that the rivalry between Google and Microsoft is really showing itself. With the release of Microsoft’s Bing search engine to try to beat out Google and now Google’s Chrome OS to try to beat out Windows. Maybe the two rivals should stick to what they know to avoid wasting money.
