The New Face of Yahoo!

Trying to stay in competition with Microsoft and Google, Yahoo decided to indulge in a face lift. The home page, image search page, and many of its features have been updated to fit each user’s particular needs.

The home page in particular has been updated to fit the needs of each user. A “My Favorites” column has been added to the home screen, allowing a user to compile favorite third-party links such as Facebook or Twitter in the column. Another perk to the home page is a make-your-own app feature! Not only can you choose from tons of applications and widgets, but now Yahoo will assist you in creating your very own.

Yahoo has been coming out with a series of updates for their image search since 2007. Starting with their Search Assistant, the image previews, a preview pane, and then a Creative Commons option (before Google), Yahoo has been on top of their image searching game.

The newest update that goes along with Yahoo’s overall face lift is a column to the left when searching for images from a popular city. For example, search images for “Nashville, TN,” and the column to the left has links to the Ryman Auditorium, the Predators, the Titans, Riverfront Park, the Nashville Zoo, and a few others. All the main attractions of downtown Nashville. The extra column is a great way to see the main attractions of a city without traveling there. I wonder if Google or Bing might try to copy Yahoo’s innovative features.
