Firefox 3.5 Pulls Ahead of IE7

statcounter

The browser world is a continuous battle for the top spot. And Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has always been the leader. However, according to StatCounter, Internet Explorer has been beat out by Firefox 3.5 for the month of December!

You can see the actual data in the picture above and if you look closely you’ll see that (yellow) Firefox 3.5 is above (blue) Internet Explorer 7.0 (click on the picture to see a larger version). The two browsers following IE7 are also Internet Explorer (IE8 and IE6), so overall Internet Explorer is still above Firefox by a land slide, but the fact that Firefox 3.5 is more popular than Microsoft’s largest browser, IE7, is definitely worth recognizing.

The rest of the standings are pretty much expected. Overall, the order is Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera. But the fact that, individually speaking, Firefox 3.5 has the momentum to push IE7 out of the top standing shows how 2009 has been an excellent year for Mozilla.

Firefox 3.5 Getting an Update Already?

Firefox 3.5, launched in early July, is already announcing an updated version. Mozilla announced just yesterday that Firefox 3.5 had several security and stability issues that needed to be addressed. So, Mozilla releases Firefox 3.5.1 yesterday to update some items and solve the previously mentioned issues.

Mozilla called the problems in Firefox 3.5 “critical” because of their potential. MacWorld reports that the problem was with “the software’s ‘Just-In-Time’ compiler used for JavaScript. A crash could result in an exploitable memory corruption problem that could, under certain cases, be exploited by an attacker to run arbitrary code, like malware.” Details on the security problem can be found here.

Don’t panic that your computer is going to be hacked by some crazy attackers or a virus will get to it faster if you have Firefox 3.5. All you have to do is update to Firefox 3.5.1 here. Issues like this probably should have been found and addressed when Firefox 3.5 was in its beta stages.

Firefox 3 Is Out & It’s The Best Firefo...

Firefox 3 is the best Firefox yet

There’s a growing number of web users who turn to Mozilla’s Firefox browser for their surfing needs.  Each year, Firefox gains little bits of market share on Internet Explorer (Microsoft’s King of Browsers).

There are four of us here in the Keystone office that are total Firefox disciples (and three more who, sadly, insist on sticking with IE).  Firefox has built its niche on being a faster, more secure browsing experience–oh, and they invented the whole “tabbed browsing” thing that IE and Safari and everyone else has since copied.

Well, last week saw the release of Firefox 3, the newest release, and I’m pretty pleased to tell you that it’s the best Firefox yet.  There are, according to Mozilla, over 15,000 improvements in this new version.  Many of the things you’ll notice are aesthetic:  the back button is a bit bigger, the tabs scroll and animate during browsing in a very slick manner, etc.  There’s also a new address bar that Firefox calls the Awesome Bar.  It’s supposedly better at predicting what you’re trying to type so you can get to your preferred destination even more quickly.  And, as usual, there have been some security updates that make Firefox’s already safe experience even safer.

But here’s the real reason you should go download and install Firefox 3:  It is fast!  Lightning fast.  Noticeably faster than Firefox 2, and light years faster than IE.  For me… that alone was reason to upgrade.

So if you’re a Firefox user, but you either hadn’t heard there was a new version, or you were holding out until it was verified as a quality version… wait no more.  Head over to Mozilla’s site and grab a copy of Firefox 3 for yourself today. You won’t regret it.
