Converted to Digital? Better Hurry

television

There is so much planned for this Friday! We just posted a blog about having to change Facebook usernames Friday and now we are reminded of the switch to all digital TV that is also happening this Friday!

The date set for the all digital transition was originally February 17 of this year, but that got delayed when the government ran out of funding for the $40 converter box coupons they were giving out. However, because of this delay, the nation seems to be better prepared for the change this weekend. At the end of May, records show that only 3.1 million homes in the whole country were not prepared (which is pretty good). For anyone hoping to buy more time, thinking that this date will also get pushed back, President Obama said that it definitely will not.

A converter box, digital TV, or an antenna that receives both the UHF and VHF bands is required to get signal after Friday’s switch. And just because you may have a cable subscription does not guarantee that you will be set for the switch. MSN describes this and other problems that you could be faced with after Friday. They recommend checking with your cable provider before you lose some of your favorite channels. Also, don’t forget about the possibility of some channels moving. You can locate new channels by hitting the “re-scan” button or feature on your TV’s menu after the switch is made. Some prime analog stations will continue broadcasting just for the sake of reminding people that they need to convert to digital. In spite of all the warnings and advertisements, there are bound to be many people confused on what’s happening to their TV after Friday.

If the transition is causing you to have to dispose of an old television, be sure to check the TV manufacturer’s website for recycling drop off locations or go here for more recycling information to help avoid a surge of electronic wastes.
