Computer Repairs Not that Economical

Here at Keystone, we see many computers come in and out. And even though we do not advertise repair of computers, any of our computer experts will tell you that doesn’t stop clients from asking. But when is it too late to repair your computer? When does the computer pass its useful life and become more expensive to maintain than to invest in a new one?

Well, according to Computer World, laptops are only made to be useful for three years (four or five tops). After this point, the computer’s repair costs start to surpass its value. A cost model for laptops developed by J. Gold Associates LLC founder, Jack Gold, says that after the three-year mark laptops begin to cost an extra $960 to maintain! This is more than the cost of an average NEW laptop! On top of that, Gold says after the four-year mark the productivity of the computer goes down dramatically, due to slower rebooting and navigation. In a company atmosphere, this is a large contributor to wasted time of employees and wasted money of the company.

Think about how much money has gone down the drain after numerous repairs on a five-year-old notebook. All these shocking statistics are based on notebooks under warranty costing $970 to repair, as opposed to $1,425 for those laptops no longer under warranty (which is usually the case when you get into the fifth year of a notebook).

A word of advice, next time you call up your favorite tech guy to repair your 1998 laptop, consider investing in a new one.
