A Personal Locator for Computers

world

Google Maps is a well known place to go when looking for directions or local businesses. Most of its features, however, aren’t very original and can be found in many of the other large direction/map sites like Bing Maps, MapQuest, and even Yahoo! Maps. To set themselves apart from the rest, Google Maps has come up with a new feature.

My Location has been available on cell phones for some time now, but the possibility of it being on a desktop has only been a thought. Since Google created My Location on cell phones in 2007, users have wished for the same feature on desktops and laptops. Google has now announced the ability to use My Location feature on desktops and laptops at the Google Maps page!

To let Google Maps find your location on your laptop or desktop, click on the My Location button (top left corner) on the Google Maps page. A blue circle should highlight your approximate location if the signal is clear enough. The only down side to this cool new feature is it is only available on Google Chrome 2.0+ or Firefox 3.5+.

If you are using Internet Explorer, you can sign up to use a feature (still in lab testing) from Google called Google Toolbar with My Location. This locator is supposed to find your location to make searching for local shops and restaurants easier. However, Google Toolbar with My Location is not the easiest thing to figure out. I tried putting it on my computer for the sake of this article and it did not work; it could not find my location.

Either way you decide to go, it is a great accomplishment to be able to find your location anywhere in the United States by logging into your gmail account.
